$2500.00

He is known not only for his tenor voice, but also for hiscaricatures, mainly of himself given to friends and fans. This bronze, created by him, and cast in small numbers in 1909,was given to only his closest friends and colleagues, illustrating his talentas an artist, showing a sense of humor, fun, and an acute awareness ofcontemporary pop culture.

This particular bronze is the very first casting attempt at theRoman Bronze Works, NY and was kept by Caruso himself for many years.Caruso later gave this casting to the RCA “Hall of Progress”, atthe David SarnoffResearch Centerin Cherry Hill, N.J. The exhibition was closed in the late1950’s and we acquiredthis firstcastingfrom a long-retired RCA executive. The bust measures6.25\" tall, 4.75\" across the shoulders, 4” deep, and weighsapproximately two pounds. It is clearly signed and dated in the metal, on hisleft shoulder, has his name stamped on the lower base, and bears the earlieststamped foundry mark of Roman Bronze Works, NY, on the reverse.

The foundry wasestablished in 1897 by Riccardo Bertelli. It was the first American foundry tospecialize in the lost-wax casting method, and was the country’s pre-eminentart foundry during the turn of the 20thcentury. #10671
