I was lucky enough to have seen Fleetwood Mac in Camden, NJ, on July 29th. We had *fantastic* seats, in the second row, center! Orleans opened the show and really only played for about 20 minutes, followed by Pat Benatar, who sounded terrific, IMO. (There was quite a large Benatar following in the audience, it seemed.) I know that a few days ago someone else who had seen FM posted their set list, and I noticed last night that there were some variations in the show I saw. The songs performed (in order) were: The Chain, Say You Love Me, Oh Well (which was nice and bluesy but sounded odd w/ Bekka singing on it; I thought they should have left it w/ just Billy), We Just Disagree, Gold Dust Woman (I wasn’t sure what I’d think of this done by someone other than Stevie, but w/ all due respect to her, a lot of the strength of the song lies in the rhythm section, and they sounded HOT), Dear Mr. Fantasy (John seemed to show the most enthusiasm while playing this song; he was really getting into it-- for most of the show he was way in the back by the drum kit, only venturing out a few times to walk around to the other side), World Turning, Go Your Own Way, and Don’t Stop. All in all, they sounded fantastic; Bekka has some voice on her!
I was really glad to see the audience responding well and getting into it-- when I saw FM last year in Scranton, PA, it seemed that the place was only half full, and most of the folks there really only wanted to see Crosby, Stills and Nash. I was *embarrassed* for Mick during his drum solo that day; the crowd just wasn’t with him. It was MUCH better last night! It may have also felt this way to me since I was right up at the front where the action is. Oh, they did do one encore-- the lights were dimmed, and Mick sat at the front of the stage w/ a little snare, along w/ Bekka and Billy. Bekka told us that she was lucky enough to have recently written a song w/ Billy, who was her best friend in the whole world, and that this was the first time they were performing it anywhere. It was a nice song, I suppose sort of like a ballad, but they never said what it was called. The words were something about ‘It keeps me going on, I’ll be forever holding on, dream by dream...’
After that song, they all came back out again, and Bekka introduced Molly McVie, who was holding John’s hand. What a beautiful kid, w/ a little pixie haircut and almond-shaped eyes. She’s about 5 1/2 now, I think; Bekka picked her up and she threw little rose petals out into the audience as the band took their applause and waved goodbye. REO Speedwagon came out after FM, and they were incredible, too (Kevin Cronin still has not done a thing w/ his hair) but we left early to avoid the awful traffic. One last noteworthy adventure--while we were waiting to pay the toll at the Ben Franklin Bridge I noticed a big important looking grey bus pull up next to us-- the little side window was open so just for the hell of it I shouted, "Hey, is Fleetwood Mac in there?" Bekka-- I kid you not-- stuck her face in front of the window and yells out, "Yes they are!" She waved to me and disappeared again. We were tempted to follow them to their hotel but decided to try and be mature and leave the poor, tired band alone. I’m regretting my maturity today!!
Anyway, just thought I’d give you all the run-down on the show... we had a really great time.
