Hollywood (Some Other Kind Of Town)
Written by Christine McVie and Eddy Quintela.
Another of Christine McVie's 5 masterpieces from the far unnoticed Fleetwood Mac 1995 release Time. As like her other songs on this album, this one deals with her imminent departure from Fleetwood Mac. This song specifically shows her disgust with Hollywood, the Southern California lifestyle, and her desire to be back home in England.
This part of the song may not only apply to Hollywood but to any city Christine visits while touring with the band. She's sick of the glitz and glamour that fame can bring. She cannot find her husband or those she cares about because they're so far away - part of Christine's other life in England. That is the life she wants, the normal life she wants to lead.
The pressures of Southern California, recording and touring with Fleetwood Mac are mounting and starting to drive Christine crazy. She can't take it much more. It seems lyrically that Eddy, Christine's husband, has gone ahead to England without her. If he's there, with everything else she knows and loves, there's nothing left in Los Angeles, California or the United States for her to accomplish.
Now Christine is going through the stage that every person goes through before a major change like this. Comparing and contrasting, pros and cons, no matter how you say it, England wins out above all in her mind and in her heart. She likes the weather better there...basically, she just likes everything about her real home better.
This is Christine's sort of farewell statement. Who it's aimed at, we're not sure. It could be aimed at California and the US, Mick and John or just to Fleetwood Mac in general. Like her other songs on this album, she says she'll look back fondly on her memories and wouldn't do it any differently.
The moonlight and all the neon of Los Angeles can be both a welcoming and an overwhelming sight. Before Fleetwood Mac relocated to Los Angeles., Christine was the one apprehensive member of the band...she didn't want to leave everything she knew and loved in England. But she did agree to go on a 6 month trial basis, she ended up staying almost 23 years. Now that she's looking back on her life with the band, she now realizes that the combination of herself and everything about Los Angeles could never be right. The only right pairing here is between Christine and her native home of England.
Christine is still going back and forth in her mind about her decision but she knows she doesn't like Hollywood anymore and she wants to be back home. She has to move on and end that chapter in her life.
(Hollywood)
Some other kind of town...
Christine knows she and Los Angeles don't mix anymore and now she has to leave. She knows that the time is right and that she's definitely made the right choice to start anew in England.
This song is one of the most straightforward and most autobiographical-seeming of Christine's songs, which in itself is a rare occurence. It's practically "Homeward Bound" - Part Two.
Christine has left the band she loves but it's only for the best. She's made a huge decision to make this change in her life. But as we all know, she'll be back.
