Review by Amy Costello, August 14, 1998
I attended A Day in the Garden/Woodstock yesterday and would like to share some of my impressions.
This took place on the original site for Woodstock on the same date’s 29 years ago.
I missed Francis Dunnery, we got there just a Ziggy Marley was taking the stage.
We got a fantastic spot just off stage right with an un-obstructed view, that is until Don Henley and later, Stevie Nicks took the stage, then pretty much everyone stood up.
It was kind of an afterthought for me to go to this, when I heard about it originally, I did not want to go, but as the tour wound down on the west coast and she was farther away, I was getting that yearning again and HAD to see her.
Due to this 2 for one SCAM by the promoters, I got 3 extra tickets so it was me, my mom, my sister, her two sons (ages 5 and 11) and my 18 year old niece, it was a 3 generation festival for us. I’ve got to say these 2 boys were troopers, I prepared them that the one I wanted to see was on last, and when we got there and they saw how long the sets were, they kept asking; are you sure she’s on last. Even through the rain, nobody complained, Thank you guys!!
This was the first time I've gone to a music festival like this and I really loved it.
You are sitting comfortable in a lawn chair or on a blanket, chilling out, eating, listening to great music, its wonderful. I actually took a cat nap during one of Dons songs, you cannot do that at a regular, 1 artist concert.
Ziggy and his Melody Makers were great, "Rastafarian Man!!" (sp?)
Ten Years After, did those long instrumental jams that you can only get live, that I love and they also did some 50's style music.
I still cannot believe I saw Don Henley live, he did his great songs plus Desperado and Hotel California as encores, when he got to the part "we haven’t had that spirit here since 1969" of course everyone went crazy.
His 3 backup singers in their tight jeans and black bodysuits were kind of cheesy to me, but I guess it works for him.
Some people cleared out from the stage area after Don, people were basically standing there all day for the various performers, but it was a relaxed atmosphere, no pushing and shoving, lots of room, good views from everywhere.
I decided to try for a spot up front, and was lucky to get right up against the barrier, near stage right.
Stevie looked rested and happy, she was smiling and totally "on" when she first came out she was dancing and doing air drums and guitar.
I took about 20 pictures with my zoom , but only during the first two songs, because I went back and joined my family, more on that later.
Stevie said that "I got to ride in a helicopter and it was so exciting seeing all of you People down there"
She acknowledged this as her last show on this Enchanted tour. It was the same band, stage crew, and setlist (minus stop draggin...).
It started misting as she came on stage and was raining pretty hard by Gold Dust Woman.
She made a lot of comments about the weather, that she was hoping for sun, but was glad it was raining, it made it "special" and that we all looked more beautiful, like we were shining or glittering.
The rain did stop by the end of the set, but we were all soaked already, including Stevie, but she said "its ok and if we were gonna stick around to watch, she would stay and sing", (like we're four hours from the parking lot, WHERE are we going?)
The best part for me was, you could actually hear what she was saying, in the previous shows I saw, the audience pretty much drowned out her words, but I guess the sound is better filtered in the totally open air setting.
During Landslide, she picked a gal from the audience, Andrea, and invited the girl onstage for the song (this might have been a miscommunication with security), but it was fun to watch, she walked all the way to the end of the stage to meet her and they hugged for the longest time (who would let go of Stevie?) two seperate times. Stevie asked her at the end of the song if she could do this (sing in front of all these people), Andrea shook her head no, Stevie said she thinks she could.
She could not shake hands during E of 17 , but did walk the entire length of the stage and waved to everyone, way out to the back of lawn.
At the end she said that she was so thrilled to be at Woodstock and saw the movie in 1969 at a drive-in and said, "if I go there I’m going in the helicopter, I’m not walking or driving in
Well this fan drove in and had to walk about a mile from the parking lot and it was all worth it.
Wonderful show and end to this tour.
Thank you Stevie and you are very welcome..........

Thought you would be interested in a review of the Woodstock 98 show. While
not officially part of Stevie's tour, she considered this the last show of her
tour.
It was a cloudy morning on Friday, August 14 as I awoke in anticipation for
the Woodstock 98 concert, better known as "A Day in the Garden". Having been
as Yasgar's Farm for the original festival in 1969, an event that was truly a
crossroads in my life, I was really looking forward to going back. This time
I had the advantage of not being high, so believe it or not I could enjoy the
music better. In 1969 I lived in New York City and it was an endless trek up
to the mountains. Today, I live in Upstate New York, much closer to the real
town of Woodstock (30 minutes away) than the concert site in Bethel.
Nevertheless, it was an easy 1 hour 15 minute drive from my house on largely
unused highways.
I arrived at the Woodstock site at 9AM and was able to get a seat close to the
stage. I brought my nephew with me, who is a musician and wanted to enjoy the
feel of Woodstock. He is just a little younger than I was in 1969. As we set
up camp, the festivities began. At the top of the hill was a small stage
where local musicians performed starting at 9AM and played between the main
acts. My nephew, who is a drummer wondered around and soon found a drummer
that taught him an African beat. Before you knew it there were 6 drummers
jamming with lots of people watching. Totally cool.
At 11 AM, the first act, Francis Dunnery took the main stage. While I didn't
know his music, he was a fitting start for the festival. Francis, who is from
northern England, played a largely acoustic set with pickup musicians. His
music was really good and had a protest theme similar to 1969.
Shortly after noon, Ziggy Marley and the Melodymakers took the stage. The
band, which largely lives on from the legendary Bob Marley really got everyone
going with its Reggae beat. I go to the Islands frequently, so I can see that
they are one step above all the reggae musicians I have ever seen. They
finished their show with Jammin, which had everyone dancing.
Next on the agenda was Alvin Lee and Ten Years After. Ten Years After was
one of the original bands from 1969, so I was really looking forward to seeing
them. Ten Years After's music really is close to the roots of rock-n-roll.
Alvin Lee was largely influenced by Chuck Berry. After all these years, he
still is a dazzling guitar player. They played many of their hits. lots of
songs that I haven't heard for years, but I they where familiar, since I still
have my old Ten Years After records. They finished their set by "Goin Home"
which really rocked the place followed by a couple of encores.
At about 3:30, Don Henley took the stage. His full blown band really sounded
the most professional of the day. He played lots of his hits and everything
was really perfect. He related to the Woodstock site, saying that it is about
to change forever losing its farm roots as a cable magnet and developer has
bought to turn it into a regular music festival site. We can all thank him,
though for saving it and allowing us to enjoy the music there forever, even if
it becomes commercial. However, Don Henley certainly related to the old
Woodstock by singing End of the Innocence here. Near the end of his show he
played my personal favorite, Sunset Grill, which really rocked the place. His
encores, much to everyone’s pleasure and delight were Hotel California and
Desparado, both Eagles songs.
Finally, after all the great musicians, it was time for Stevie. As the
anticipation grew, it started to drizzle. Finally, when Stevie hit the stage,
it began to rain in true Woodstock fashion. As everyone knows, it rained in
1969 and again at the 25th anniversary concert in 1994 in Saugerties, so why
should 1998 be any different. It was only appropriate that it rain on Stevie.
Of course she opened her show with Outside the Rain and Dreams. Stevie said
she loves the rain but wanted it to be sunny today. She blamed Rhiannon for
the rain, looking at the sky and said she would go on no mater what. She
thanked everyone for being there, and related how in 1969 she was in a drive-
in San Francisco thanking that one day she would be here. Being part of
the San Francisco music scene at the time, she dreamed of one day coming to
Woodstock to perform and to fly into the site on a helicopter. Today, she got
here wish and told of being very excited to fly over and see all the people
there waiting for her to play.
As she played Gold Dust Woman, the rain got a little heavier. However,
despite the stage getting wet she still did a couple of twirls. I liked her
performance today better than when I saw her in Radio City. Then I missed
Lindsey's guitar. Today, I just settled in and realized that I was listening
to a great singer and it didn't matter who was playing behind her.
Stevie going into her clothes changes was not as disruptive this time, as when
she went to change, the stage hands ran out to dry the stage. It was
hilarious. When she took the stage for her acoustic set, which I truly love,
it was raining pretty hard. While she went through all the explanations of
all the songs, which were necessary to understand what they were about, some
of the fans grumbled because they were getting wet. The true fans really
loved it though.
When it was time for Landslide, she didn't know anyone here to dedicate the
song to, so she pulled a fan out of the audience and invited her on stage to
join her in the song. She dedicated the song to that fan and all of us
standing in the rain which was truly moving. The fan danced to the song not
believing that Stevie had chosen her to join her on the stage. At the end
Stevie gave her a great big hug and thanked her.
When Stevie sang Rhiannon, it really poured, and she enjoyed every minute of
it, even though the water was literally pouring at her feet. It was only
fitting that at the end of the song, it stopped raining.
As the show was drawing to a close, I worked myself closer to the railing.
She played Twisted, then it was time for Edge of Seventeen. The stage at
Woodstock was a high stage and there were aisles with security people and
railings. I had hoped that Stevie would come off the stage and shake
everyone's hand as she did in Radio City, but it was impossible to do here
with the setup. She did walk from one edge of the stage to the other waving
and blowing kisses to everyone.
Finally it was time for the encores. She moved everyone including herself
with a great rendition of Has Anyone Ever Written a Song For You. At the
end, she said that this would be the last performance of this set, but looked
forward to coming back and doing another show in the future. Stevie was in
tears when she joined hands with her musicians and really realized that it was
all over.
Seeing Stevie Nicks at the end of the day was really a fitting end to a great
day. She was really the only musician that truly was in the spirit of
Woodstock. The others played and referred to Woodstock in some way or
another. Ten Years After were certainly there in 1969 and recreated the
magic. However, even though she was not there in 1969, Stevie was just as
much part of us as she was part of herself.
The owner plans to have a 30th anniversary concert next year. I sure hope he
invites Stevie back.
Review by MaryLiz, August 14, 1998
I just got back from seeing Stevie's great performance at the Day in the Garden concert at Woodstock. I'm really tired, but I wanted to type this out before I forgot anything...so forgive me if it doesn't totally make sense!
:-) Oh yeah, I'm sorry that it turned out so long too!
Well, we got a bit lost getting to the site this morning so I didn't get there
as early as I had wanted...we were still able to put our chairs down in a good
spot though, so I guess it doesn't really matter. After sitting down for a few
minutes I saw the great banner that Welsh Witch had made, so I went over and
said a quick "hello" to Janel, Welsh Witch, and Laura TN (loved your hat,
btw.) Then I returned to my seat to count the hours until Stevie took the
stage. ;-)
Actually, Francis Donnelly, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, and Ten Years
After (particularly Ten Years After) were all quite good...but I was very
impatient to get to Don Henley, and then, of course, STEVIE! Well, as I said
before, I ended up getting pretty good seats, but once the concert got going
(like by Ziggy Marley's second song) people had moved down the hill and were
standing...and I could no longer see a thing. They cleared out after his set
was over, but then a bunch more showed up and blocked my view once Ten Years
After began their set. That didn't really bother me, since I was there to see
Stevie...but I decided that I'd have to get a better spot to watch her show.
When Ten Years After finished the area started to clear out a little again, so
I decided to leave my chair and just stand (as close as I could) for the rest
of the concert. I ended up having a great spot as I was able to get myself up
next to the security dividers (like, the seating areas were divided in half,
with this section for security in the center.) So, I ended up about 8 people
back for Don Henley's show, and moved up a couple more places for Stevie's.
But, being on the side like I was, I was able to just lean over the divider a
little and have a clear view of Don's (and later Stevie's) mic. It was great!
Far better than I had expected to be able to see.
Anyway, now that I've bored you with the thrilling details of my finding a
place to watch the show (I was just so excited with the view I got that I had
to share) I just want to take a second to mention how much I enjoyed Don's
show. He sounded (and looked!) very good. Mindy Stein sang back-up with him,
and Frank Simes (looking very good too, btw! ;-) was one of his guitarists.
Don sang "Heart of the Matter," which, just like, made my day (well, made my
day up until Stevie's show. :-) He also did "Hotel California" and "Desperado"
as encores, which made me a very happy girl.
Ok, now for Stevie! I actually think she was better here than when I saw her
in Camden, if that's possible (because I thought she was near perfect in
Camden!) I did miss a few things from Camden, though, namely: Chris Nicks
introducing her by reading the definition of Enchanted, "Stop Draggin' My
Heart Around," the gorgeous stage set-up she had on her tour, and the lighting
from her tour (I missed it on "Twisted" especially.)
I won't go through song by song since you all know the set list by now (and I
have a feeling this is going to be too long anyway.) I was very happy that she
did perform the entire set, though. I had heard a few people saying that she
wouldn't be, so I was a bit worried. I just can't get over how happy she
seemed on this tour. She was all smiles, sounded great, looked fabulous, and
just so friendly and talkative with the audience.
One of the things Stevie kept mentioning was the rain. It had been overcast
all day, but when Stevie took the stage it started to rain...it stopped
raining before the end of her set, but by that time everyone was thoroughly
drenched. Anyway, during "Dreams" after singing "Thunder only happens when
it's raining," she sang "but not today," (no thunder!) and smiled. It was
really cute. After "Dreams" when she welcomed us all to the show she said how
she usually wished for rain, "but then on the one day I wanted sun..." She
said that if we'd stay and listen in the rain that she'd stay and sing in it.
Later on in the show she again thanked up for staying in the rain. That she
personally liked rain better than sun anyway, but had been worried that when
it started to rain we'd all leave and she be left standing on stage saying
"Come back..." (The way she held out her arms and said this was really too
cute.) Also, these guys kept coming out to dry off the stage, and one of those
times she marched over near one of the guys, put her hands on her hips and
said "Scrub that floor!" and laughed. It was so nice to see how relaxed and
joking she was with the audience. Ok, enough about Stevie and the rain (she
did keep looking up at the rain, then she'd turn to one of her band members,
shrug her shoulders, and laugh, it was funny)...ok, I'll move on.
She again mentioned how this tour had been special, that she got to do the
songs she wanted to do, etc, etc. She told the same basic stories for the
acoustic set, just varied the wording a little...like when intro-ing "Garbo"
she said something about getting in a bit of trouble for being unhappy with
the photo shoot, "Grow up...you're being childish...it's art..." I think it's
cute how people cheer when she mentions the Buckingham Nicks album. Also, I
think it was during the acoustic part of the set that she talked about her
talking...you know, how she's never talked this much before, and that this may
be the last time (since it's her last concert for "Enchanted") that she'll
talk this much. As an aside, I really hope she talks like this on her next
tour...I don't care what about...she could stand there talking about what she
had for lunch that day and I'd probably listen with rapt attention. I think
her talking to the audience really adds to her show. It just strengthens the
connection she has with the audience, in my opinion. I mean, I like Don Henley
a lot. The songs he performed sounded excellent, but that little extra
something was missing. He just doesn't connect with the audience like Stevie
does. I mean, watching him you knew you were seeing him performing at a
concert. Watching Stevie there are times where it seems that you're sitting
around with a bunch of friends in her living room. That probably didn't make
sense, but it's late so what do you expect? :-) All I'm trying to say is that
Stevie is really an incredible performer.
She seemed to take longer than usual with the band intros tonight, probably
because this was the last show. (I know that she told the last show that they
were the last show, but she said the same thing to us. :-) It was very sweet
when she introduced Sharon Celani. She mentioned how she met her way back in
'78 or something, and how she lived in a treehouse. A very nice treehouse, but
it was a treehouse none the less. And that Sharon "gave all that up to come
sing with me." She said she loved her very much, and then went over and hugged
her (she was hugging just about all the band members as she introduced
them...it was sweet.) She introduced Carlos Rios last, saying something like
he was someone who has stuck with her "through good and bad, thin and fat, and
popular and unpopular," then she smiled and hugged him too. :-)
Stevie didn't do a lot of dancing tonight, probably because of the stage being
slippery (there were a few times where she jokingly made arm motions like she
was falling. :-) She did twirl around a couple time in the middle of GDW,
which, of course, made the crowd go crazy. She also gave a big kick during one
of the songs (I can't remember which..."Stand Back," maybe?) I've gotta say
that I'm truly impressed by the fact that she can lift one of those huge boots
up that high! :-) And she did do that little dance, like she does for "Angel"
in the Tuck Documentary, during one of the songs, too. (She played air drums
and air keyboards once in awhile as well.)
She sounded great, I just can't say enough about how much I loved "Enchanted,"
"Gold and Braid," "After the Glitter Fades," "Gold Dust Woman," and "Twisted,"
on this tour. (I loved all the other songs too, of course!)
When it came time to dedicate Landslide, she went to the side of the stage to
pick someone. Since there was a lot of space between the stage and the
audience, she tried getting one of the security guys to go over and get this
lucky woman's name. Well, I guess the guy was a bit confused, and instead of
just bringing Stevie the name, her brought her the girl! Stevie turned to
Frank as they lifted the lucky fan over the divider thingy, like "that's not
what I meant!" Then she laughed and went over to the side of the stage to meet
the lucky woman (sorry, I don't remember her name!) She hugged Stevie (a few
times!) and got to stand on stage while she sang Landslide. How incredible
would that be? I'm happy (though jealous...although I probably would have
fainted ;-) for whoever it was, she must be a big fan...she kept telling
Stevie "Thank you" and "you have no idea how much this means to me." It was so
sweet of Stevie to bring her up on stage like that.
At some point Stevie talked about how great she thought performing here was.
She said something like "I want to tell you all something, even though the
critics will probably get on my case and call it self indulgent...but it's the
last show of my tour so I'm going to tell you anyway..." Then she said
something about having seen the Woodstock movie years ago. She continued by
telling us how she had been flown in by helicopter before her concert, so she
had been able to see everyone from above...just how neat that site was, how
she was glad we were all there, and that she could be a part of it.
The concert went by too fast, and before I knew it the bongo/drum solo before
"Edge of Seventeen" was starting. (No rushing the stage, though. :-( ) This
song was fabulous, as always, and had lots of people singing along. (One of
the neat things I notice was that many of the people who were singing along
with every song were around my age [20]...Stevie really has reached a new
generation of fans.) When it got to the part where she usually goes around
shaking hands she walked along the edge of the stage waving. This was, like,
the first time that I took my eyes off the stage during the show, and when I
looked around it was truly impressive. There were TONS of people there, and
all around the stage area, far off to either side, and many rows deep everyone
was standing, cheering, and waving. It was great to see.
Then came the encores. No Leather and Lace...they must have already flown Don
Henley out of there. At first I thought I might be disappointed about the
lack of Leather and Lace, but Stevie's concert was so good as it was, that I
really didn't miss it. She closed with "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For
You," of course, and this was one of the most touching renditions of this song
that I have heard. It was magic. I wanted to cry...Stevie DID cry. She had a
hard time finishing the "poet...priest of nothing...legend..." part, and in
fact, didn't do the "when they ask her about the men in her life..." part. I
think she was too choked up to get it out. After the song ended the rest of
her band came out, took a final bow, and then Stevie left the stage
waving...and still crying. I guess she usually gets this emotional at the end
of her tours...I know I'm sorry to see this tour end!
Well, I'll end this now, finally! (I'm truly impressed that you've read this
far!) I just want to say that I'm so happy that I decided to go to this Day in
the Garden thing. Stevie's show alone was worth the price of admission, the
loss of my voice (I sang along and cheered wildly throughout...that was what
was nice about this concert, no one was yelling at you to sit down and shut
up) and they weight I'll probably gain from having to stop on the way home to
get something to eat (probably had the munchies as a result of all the second
hand pot smoke I inhaled! :-) At some point near the end of the show Stevie
again told the audience to keep themselves healthy so that "we can do this
again." I know I can't wait to see her on tour again. (Greedy, aren't I?)
There really is no one else like her. Thank you Stevie.
Review by Torri, August 18, 1998
So the sojourn continued...Dave and I woke up early on Thursday...excited
about seeing Stevie and Sharon (and of course, the rest of the band) one
more time...and we started out on our 8 hour road trip...on our way to pick
up our friends, Tracy and Jeff (yes, my Tampa concert buddies)...we noticed
my car was making a bizarre, very bad noise...we were just happy that the
problem happened that close to home (about 30 minutes) so we were able to
turn around and take Dave's car instead...whew...so we picked up Tracy and
Jeff...who were caravaning to Woodstock with us...and we drove...listening
to Stevie all the way...and talking...and enjoying the beautiful views...as
we drove in to Bethel...the sun was setting...and I remember feeling very
blessed...we didn't have a place to stay...so we just drove around for
awhile...saw the stage...we parked for awhile then got moved along by
security...we had found the employee parking lot...then we decided to try
and find the campground that julieso had kindly given me the name of...and
luckily Narrowsburg wasn't that big...found it with no problem and pitched
our tents...and hung out...nothing like good friends...and the night
sky...and the anticipation of seeing another Stevie show...but I was able to
finally get to sleep...and woke up the next morning waaay too excited...we
piled in one car...and drove to get tickets...and then to the site...Dave
told us original Woodstock stories...Jeff was getting comfortable with his
fears...he had decided he really wanted to wear a skirt...and I must
say...he looked GOOD!...Tracy was thrilled to be seeing Don Henley (she's an
obsessed Joe fan)...and me...well, you know...one of the local radio
stations was playing music from the artists scheduled...and when Edge of
Seventeen came on...I knew it would be a great day...and as we all sang
along...I thought of blackcat...and all the other Ledgies...with us in
spirit...and again felt blessed...
We got in about 10:30...we were able to park close...and walked...the
Woodstock site is pretty cool...as you come in...you're on the top of a big
hill...and look down to the stage...all you can see...is more hills in the
distance...very peaceful...and the aura is still there...but how did they
fit all those people back in '69...I'm not sure how many were there on
Friday...but it seemed like alot...so we walked around...looking for the
Enchanted Bear for S...we were unable to find any artist's
merchandise...just the Woodstock t-shirt booth...as we walked down and up
the hill, we saw many people...smiling...saying hi...and just out enjoying
the day...many reactions to Jeff's skirt...but he'd gotten comfortable...and
was enjoying himself...we sat down finally on the right side of the hill
about halfway up the hill...and chilled to Ziggy...and watched people
dance...when he finished people left the front rows...and Tracy turned and
asked if I was ready to go down front...I had been itching to do that for
hours...or so it seemed...we invited Dave and Jeff...they just looked at us
like we were crazy...they had no desire to stand up for the next 6
hours...so we smiled...said have fun...don't get in trouble :)...and we'll
find you later...and off we went...I stopped to talk to a couple of women
with Stevie t-shirts on...one was somewhat territorial...and wanted to know
where our seats were...I tried to explain we were heading to them now...and
come on...as Tracy led us to the front...I saw a bunch of girls with Stevie
t-shirts and honor garb on...so I, of course gravitated in that
direction...and as we planted our feet about 4 rows back on the center-right
side...I heard 2 of the women talking to another about a banner...can I tell
you how excited I was...so I asked if they were the Ledgies...and Michelle
and Rachel showed me their seriously beautiful banner...and we said hi...I
had to ask...where is LauraTN...had I just looked for the awesome Top
Hat...she was in front...and I got to say hi...twice...not Lori, Torri...oh,
the Nashville show...and got to wave at someone...about that time...2 girls
with Stevie shirts come up...and are trying to make their way to the
front...through the Ledgies...I just laughed and said...I don't think you'll
be getting through here...these are serious fans...they just
said...cool...it's a great view...we'll stay here...and we talked a
bit...and suddenly I feel a tap on my shoulder...it's julieso...how
cool...so we kick back...and enjoy Ten Years After...behind us was a big fan
with his young son...people would come up...dance for a while then
leave...all very loose and friendly...then Don came on...I had lost Tracy as
she was finding a better spot but could still see her grinning and
singing...and we'd exchange looks that were whole conversations...I enjoyed
watching Mindy and Frank during this set...Frank was flirting big time with
our girls up front...and one of the other back-up singers on the left of
Mindy looked SO familiar to me...hmm...Don's show was fun...and we all sang
along...then we wait...by this time...I'm getting tired of standing but know
that it will be worth it...and am enjoying the anticipation and Julie and
our 2 new Stevie friends and I are getting very excited...being able to
share that with you, Julie was wonderful...thank you...and then finally it's
time for Stevie...just as the band walks out...we feel the first rain
drop...and Julie and I look at each other and just smile...it was perfect...
Chris wasn't there to introduce Stevie and I missed him...some guy kept
yelling...Mortica...Sharon, I love you...when she came out on stage...and
yes, I'm sure it wasn't Dave :) ...and it made me smile...then Stevie came
on...Outside the Rain/Dreams...everyone was singing, dancing, and getting in
to it and it was pouring rain...and Stevie sounded wonderful...when she
sang...'thunder only happens when it raining...but not tonight'...and
smiled...we all knew everything happens as it's supposed to...and there was
something about being at Woodstock...watching Stevie...being washed clean
with the rain...just a feeling I really can't decribe...but I'll never
forget it...and seeing so many true fans with that look and smile on their
faces...it was very joyful...so Stevie says...'Welcome everybody...I have to
share with you...I got to fly in on a helicopter...and see all of you
guys...it was so incredible...I want to tell you a little bit about this
show because this is, in fact, my last show of this tour...what a great
place to have it, isn't it...and this show has been really fun for
me..because it's been backing up a box set which is different then backing
up a record...you can actually do some things you always wanted to do but
couldn't because they weren't those songs...so on this tour, I have been
able to do these things...and it's like...been such an incredible pleasure
so...if you hear something you don't recognize, bear with me, there's a
message...you missed it, it was in like 1985 or something, you
know...and...welcome'...and she was smiling...by this time...I have to wipe
my glasses off so I can see anything...and Enchanted starts...I hope you
make it...and when I remember someone...I remember their dreams...I close my
eyes...feel the rain on my face...and think of Keith...and am feeling that
good karma...then suddenly as Gold Dust Woman starts...and I'm getting in to
Stevie singing...'your sunrise loves to go down...you don't want to see
it'...a very rude guy starts shoving me...hard...like because he is bigger
and ruder he will push his way to the front...luckily I had 2 other guys on
the other side of me who I had talked with who were aware of what was going
on...and helped me hold my ground...as did the other die-hards who'd been
standing for many hours ..and as the song went on...this guy and his girl
got uglier...I unfortunately was going down that path with them...pain does
strange things...and getting squished by mean people isn't fun...so I made a
choice...and desperately said to the guy...come on, dude, give me a
break...I've been standing here for 4 hours...at least let me enjoy the
show...well...he quit bruising my kidneys at least...and I felt that bad
karma and anger disapate...and went back to enjoying Stevie...I looked in
front of me...and barbara and Mo...there was a whole contingent of us girls
doing spider fingers...made me smile...then Stevie says...'they are warning
me...it's very slick over here...thank you very much...stay here...we're
still having fun, right...what can we do?' or something to that effect...I
hear a few I love you Stevie's...wipe my glasses off again...and Gold and
Braid starts...and I smile and think of Hayley...my hippie kindred
spirit...and remember the first time I saw Stevie perform this song on the
In Concert video...and how gone I was...and how so many years later...I'm
here...at Woodstock...seeing my favorite singer...again...what a trip it's
been...Stevie tells her guys to wipe the floor...and then kinda shyly
smiles...like I know you're getting drenched...but I'm standing in a puddle
of water...not good...she's just so cute...then she says she'll be right
back...next the acoustic set...but first I must explain that my kidney
crushing friend has now put his woman on his shoulders...and for most of
this set...the people in back of them...keep yelling at him to put her
down...whew, there is alot of anger in people...I just tried to hear
Stevie...and find that place inside myself that only her music can take
me...and I did...she talked for awhile...'Alright, once and for all, out
here in this drenching rain...can I tell you that I always want it to
rain...today I wanted it to be beautiful and sunny...and
look...Rhiannon...she just came in here and did her thing...so...we're stuck
with it so...we'll do this...we'll have fun...we'll make it in to a...more
than special day...I have gone back through all these songs since like 1982
and picked out 3 songs that I think really tell you alot about me and
Lindsey...and going to Los Angeles to try and make it in the music
business...and knowing that...when you hear these songs...maybe you'll be
able to relate a little bit more to what happened to us...this is a song
that is so incredible to me...umm, the first song is about... really about
how much we love to sing...and we hoped that that would get us through the
bad parts...and in fact, today...it has gotten us through all the bad
times...it's called After the Glitter Fades'...at this point, I'm
thinking...the glitter never fades...for me it IS the only life that I've
ever known...and I'm happy to be experiencing yet another Stevie live
show...she is just so good...then she ends the song and says...'thank you so
much everybody...are we ok'...we all yell yeah...and she says...'I much
prefer this to a bright sunny day...alright, so on with my story...and also
you guys, I've never done this before...and this is what I always wanted to
do...I've never really talked to the audience like this...and I get
like....you know...am I saying too much...but at the same time...I want to
share this with you...so the second song is about the infamous photo session
for the BN cover...everytime I tell this story I feel like I'm depressing
the audience but at the same time, I need to actually tell you what happened
so...I went to do this...I was not happy about it...I got in a lot of
trouble for not being happy about it...don't be paranoid, don't be a
child...this is art...you know...and so anyway, I thought about it...in my
dramatic 27...25...24...I was very young...dramatic way, I thought maybe the
movie stars that came here felt this way...so I went home and wrote this
song...Garbo'...and as I enjoyed the 'Marlena' wail...and the beautiful
harmonies of Stevie, Sharon, and Mindy...I was reminded of the anger as
people began screaming in ernest...DOWN IN FRONT...so I missed the
introduction to Rose Garden...and most of the song...I remember at one
point...moving out of the way...because one guy was threatening to take the
girl down himself...I swear Stevie looked over once with concern...and I was
able to hear the Weeellll...I love that part so much...but the screaming
continued as did the rain...finally when kidney crusher put her down...a
cheer from the crowd erupted...as Stevie sang...'you break my heart...and
went in to Sleeping Angel...I'm asking you to trust me...well, there's
little of that around'...I had to smile...about that time...another rude
person began getting angry that she couldn't get up front...her friend
calmed her down...there was a part of me thinking...I've been up close often
enough...maybe...then she says...WHO IS THIS...enough said...and Stevie ends
with the hmm, hmm hum...and says 'thank you very much'...kidney crusher
leaves and is replaced by a nice woman who kept dancing her elbows on my
head...but hey...she was enjoying herself...and I can appreciated her
enthusiasm...you know...I was grateful for the guys now in front of
me...asking if I could see around them...and offering to let me in front of
them...I said thanks...but I'll just peer over your shoulder...sorry if I
run in to you...they smile and say no problem...and we all start dancing to
Stand Back...Keith, I missed you, soulmate...you'll love this version... :)
...I remember seeing LauraTN in the crowd with the rest of the girls...and
wondered how they all were faring...and seems to me Stevie did do a
kick...cool...
Then Rhiannon...everyone knows this song...and that power...of all those
voices raised...lead by the best...it can't be beat...and it never fails to
move me...and I love when Stevie kind of dances across the stage
mouthing...'I don't think you would'...and smiling and looking at
people...and as she's ending the song...'don't leave me...after all these
years'...there's a moment where I'm thinking the same thing right back at
her...and then Stevie says...'Well, we made it this far...you guys...thank
you so much for like...staying...I would have been really bummed out if when
it started raining you'd all just turned and like ran out...alright, so
bless your hearts, you stayed'...then she introduced the band...I really
enjoyed the part where Stevie is introducing Land...and says...'right before
I left...of course, you know... Mick Fleetwood...when he finally understood
that I wasn't going to take him...on the tour...he said get a really good
drummer and I did'...and also when she called Lenny an incredible man...and
then she said...'I'm not exactly sure how we're going to get up and go home
on the day that this is all over with...breaks your heart, right?'...and
then when Stevie introduced Sharon...and they hugged for a long time...it
did break my heart...what can I say...I thought of Dave back somewhere in
that sea of humankind...and just felt the love...and then Stevie made her
thin/fat, popular/unpopular comment and how Carlos always has always been
her friend through it all...and as I looked around...I was just so happy for
Stevie to be here...happy in the moment...and grateful...and hoped she
understood that many of us have been there, too...in our ways...and well, we
love her...ourselves...and each other...and the music connects us...ahh, the
power...of it all...then Whole Lotta Trouble...she just wailed on this
one...and then at the end of the song...she says...'I think the rain has
stopped!'...and then she looked at Frank to find someone to dedicate
Landslide to...he looked at our girls, I swear...and they realized they
couldn't get to anyone...so Stevie walked over...and found someone...and
kept asking...'what's your name'...next thing we know...Andrea is up on
stage...thrilled beyond belief...but maintaining her composure...and
expressing to Stevie...thank you...you have know idea how much this means to
me...Stevie knew...and hugged her often...I was very touched...and this
version of Landslide for me...well, need I tell you that...as keeper of this
song...and it being my last Stevie Enchanted show...well, there were tears
welling...and I'd glance at Andrea up there smiling, singing, and living a
dream...and again felt blessed to be living mine....thank you, Stevie...for
giving me the strength through your music...to believe in myself...then came
Twisted...what an awesome song...it's an anthem...and then the great drum
solo...Lenny and Land outdid themselves...and got a big hand at the
end...then Edge...Stevie was too far away to shake hands...but she did walk
the stage...gesturing and smiling at people...and again I thought of
blackcat...and thought what a great summer this was...and what a great tour
for Stevie...and how glad I am that I had all my kind Ledgie friends to
share it with...only you guys really understand...thank you...and please if
anyone hears of a bootleg video of this show, let me know...so...Stevie ends
Edge with...'it sounds like you'...and says...'I'm standing in a pool of
water...you know what you guys...besides the fact that...ok...this is my
last show... so I can do this...and all the critics can write about it and
say that I'm self-indulgent...I don't REALLY care...the fact is...that when
I saw the movie Woodstock...twenty...I don't know...29 years ago...I was at
a drive-in movie in San Francisco...and I was a part of that San Francisco
thing...and I said...when I saw this movie...I went...you know what...I'm
going to come in...in a helicopter...I'm not going to come in in a car...and
I'm not going to walk in...and only today when I really thought about what
Woodstock meant to me...did I remember that day...and think...you know
what...that's when I made my decision that no matter what else I was going
to do in my life...I was going to do this...so you know what...I am so proud
that you guys all came tonight and that we spent this day together...and the
rain...just made you all look beautiful... so take care of yourselves so we
can do this again'...then she went offstage...there were many yells for
Leather and Lace...when she came back...she said...'so really what would a
Stevie Nicks set be without a Tom Petty song'...and I Need to Know
started...and I'm looking around me and seeing smiling faces all
around...and thinking...life is good...everyone is dancing...and having the
time of their lives...good karma now all around...and then Has Anyone Ever
Written...oh my...all you could hear was Stevie...that voice...that
message...'I want you to remember'...she did it that way twice...and 'why
DON"T you just listen to me now...and I want you to remember me...yes, I
do'...and she started to cry...and then tried to compose herself...and sang
through the tears...'poets, priests of nothing, legends 3 times...and as the
band hit that last chord...Stevie turned her back to the audience still
overcome with emotion and I just wanted to hug her...Carlos started towards
her...she turned back around...and said...'I want you all to know when it is
all said and done...that I...you know...tried to spend some time with you
and I tried to make it better...and I tried to make you happy so if we can
do this again...it would be SO good for me...I love you very much
everybody...and I hope only the best for you...I wish you...I wish you all
your dreams...I do'...then Stevie and her great band waved...and off they
went...I looked through my tears and saw Julie and the girls crying...and
went down to join them...Julie...thank you for understanding...
Then we turned to start up the hill...and I see Tracy, Jeff, and Dave coming
my way...we say hi and bye to the banner Ledgies...and start up that long
hill...talking and smiling all the way...I'm still keeping my eye out for
Jes but to no avail...next time, for sure, Ledge brother...and we make our
way to our car...and wait...it took about 2 hours to get out...but it didn't
matter...we just put on some tunes...and enjoyed our
collective...Stevie/Sharon/Don high...Jeff had the experience of his dream
woman coming up to him to compliment him on his skirt...so he was a happy
man, too :) ...we ate at a great place...went back to our campsite...and
crashed...woke up the next morning...and told each other our stories
again...then Tracy and Jeff took off for Virginia...and Dave and I went to
hear Joni...different crowd on Sat...but still very pleasant...only saw one
Stevie shirt...but I wore my Enchanted cap proudly...Dave and I walked for
awhile and decided we were beat...hey, it's a big hill to walk up and
down...so we left before Pete...and came home the next morning...
I can't believe that it's over...but I'm so happy to have experienced this
tour...and I can't wait for the next one...being able to share it with you
guys...has so enriched the experience for me...knowing that I can gush...and
you'll understand...my bohemian kindred spirit, Maureen...tells me this has
been a spiritual journey for me...and I think she's right...it's been one
for all of us, I think...and I still feel the way I felt after the Columbus
show...they are no words to describe Stevie and what her music means to
me...really...but I know you appreciate this woman as I do... so thanks for
listening to me... try to tell you how I feel...and for the encouragement to
do just that...and if you'd made it this far...and want to e-mail me to
share more music...please feel free... ;) ...ok, that's it...this is waaay
too long...whew :)
