Lexington Herald, January 3, 1992 Bob Welch, The Best Of. Rhino. .
Back in the mid-'70s, before Tin Machine was a twinkle in anyone's eye, drummer Hunt Sales (now part of David Bowie's group) and guitarist-vocalist Bob Welch (formerly of Fleetwood Mac) played in an underrated, too-quickly-dismissed band called Paris.
Its music -- Zeppelin metal crossed with Eastern imagery, slippery rhythms and the occasional pop chant -- wasn't revolutionary, but it was a beat or two ahead of the prevailing corporate thinking.
Some songs, particularly those from its atmospheric sci-fi-style second album, Big Towne, 2061, could be sticky, even addictive.
There are four Paris tracks on this Bob Welch best-of collection, and though others (notably "One in Ten") deserve to survive into the digital age, four are better than none.
Welch's "Sentimental Lady," which appeared on Fleetwood Mac's 1972 Bare Trees and was recorded again for a Welch solo effort in 1977, ranks among pop's most ruminative love songs. -- Rick Shefchik
