'Big Mac Couldn't Sing' by Tom Harrison
That was no rumor that sent 10,000 disappointed people home early on Sunday evening.
That was the last minute advice of a doctor to cancel Fleetwood Mac's concert just before the doors of GM Place were to open.
With the stage set up and ready and the band's crew standing by, the reunited Fleetwood Mac informed promoter Paul Mercs Concerts and Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment that it would not be performing.
Group member Lindsey Buckingham had bronchitis and his doctor advised him not to sing.
The announcement came at approximately 6:30 p.m., an hour before the concert was scheduled to start.
In a press release issued late Sunday, Orca Bay stated that, "The entire band sincerely regrets any inconvenience that the cancellation may have caused their fans and they look forward to returning to Vancouver in the very near future."
As of Monday afternoon, however, there was no plan to re-schedule the concert.
Tickets, which ranged from $54.00 to $93.75, are refundable at the point of purchase from all TicketMaster outlets from Friday, October 17.
If tickets were purchased through the charge-by-phone line, they can be mailed to the TicketMaster head office, 1304 Hornby Street, Vancouver, B.C., V6Z 1W6 for a full refund.
The Fleetwood Mac tour follows the reunion of the most successful line-up of the venerable expatriate English band whose 1977 album, Rumours, sold 25 million copies and made celebrities of its prominent songwriting members Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie as well as the rhythm section of founders John McVie and Mick Fleetwood.
Buckingham left the band in 1987 after the release of Tango In The Night and Nicks and Christine McVie likewise departed after 1990's Behind The Mask. A revamped Fleetwood Mac recorded Time in 1996.
The current album, The Dance was recorded for TV and compact disc as a documentary of the reunion of The Rumours configuration of the band and not only features live versions of hits from that phase of Fleetwood Mac's 30 year career but set the stage for the subsequent tour.
