Notes on the music of the Fritz Sampler
by Javier Pacheco

Our first experience in a studio occurred in the fall of 1967. By this time, Stevie and Brian had been in the band only a few months. It was generally agreed that Brian would play bass at this session because Lindsey had already been performing, knew all the guitar parts and therefore, it would be easier for Brian to just pick up the chords via the bass notes. Lindsey plays a twelve-string on these recordings.

The Studio City demo recordings (Keith Olsen, producing) feature Lindsey doing guitar and bass, with Javier on piano, and Stevie on maracas (Louisa Joy). Brian and Bob were not invited to participate in this late-night session.

Following the San Mateo recordings, Fritz began to learn new songs representing different formats. The music was freer--songs were no longer constrained by the standard 2-3 minute commercial durations. Some themes included social and political issues. The flavor turned increasingly toward hard rock and blues-inspired riffs. Brian Kane assumed more guitar parts and Lindsey performed mostly on bass. The exception was for the Theme from Bonnie and Clyde (banjo) and a song by David Harley (Created) in which Lindsey played acoustic guitar. At this time our music is characterized by more intricate blues guitar lines and livelier bass patterns.

The Fremont High School (1968) and Aragon High School (1970) live performances were recorded on an Uher reel-to-reel stereo tape recorder using two external microphones. Unfortunately, one mike got turned around during the Aragon show, hence, the vocals are hard to discern. The purpose of these submissions is to provide a glimpse of the Fritz sound in live performance, also, to demonstrate the difference in material to the larger forms and intricate parts. We were moving toward more unison lines (guitar/bass/keyboards), dynamic breaks, percussion breaks, tempo contrasts, and more three-part harmonies. By the Aragon show we had also changed our sound markedly--I switched from Vox organ and Hohner Clavinet to Hammond B-3 organ and two Leslies, with the Clavinet going through the Leslies. Brian and Bob were playing through large cabinets of twin JBL 15-inch speakers powered by pre-amps. The impact of the sound was much greater.

All music and lyrics were written by Javier Pacheco, except the words to Sad Times, originally penned by Bob Aguirre and put to music by me.

I Remember.....
Review written by walkamps, February 2nd, 2007

I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time!
I first saw Fritz open for Janis and Big Brother in SJ. Was at Winterland when they brought the crowd to their feet!(as the opening act, this was not the norm!)Was there at that Fremont HS show (Sunnyvale) And they played my Junior Prom! I'm a lucky guy.
Thanks for the memories....

The good old days
Review written by Anonymous, September 10th, 2006

I remember as a kid growing up, when Fritz would get together at my cousins house, It always made me want to be just like Bobby, I guess you can say I looked up to him, and the music, that fritz played.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!! : )
Review written by Anonymous, August 12th, 2006

I know a bit about Stevie and Lindsey, particularly in Fleetwood Mac, and I've heard a lot of music and seen plenty of music videos and documentaries, but I had only read about Fritz. So when I heard them, it was incredible!!!! Oh my gosh!!! I really really enjoyed listening to the keyboard playing, particularly on Reconsider (that has like one of the most awesome keyboard parts I have ever heard) and I thought the voices really complimented the music. It is SOOO COOL!!! The sound quality could be better, of course, but the way it is still rocks!
This music makes me wish I were alive then to hear all of it! I would love to hear the full songs! And if there is one out there, I'd love to hear a studio recording of Georgia, and maybe the Power and Yellow. Oh, and by the way, I WOULD DEFINITELY BUY THIS MUSIC IF IT WERE UP FOR SALE!!!
