THANKS for letting me visit your souls with this new collection of songs...

I call this album "JUKE RHYTHM" for several reasons. The RHYTHMS, grooves & musical-terrain over which these songs ride & dance are very important to the whole. I've always thought of myself, musically, as being in the 'people-movin' business'...melodically, lyrically, emotionally, spiritually & RHYTHMICALLY. Rhythm is part of my job...& if this music moves you than I've done my job right...

One of the great things that can happen is when you revisit former long-time musical partners & come up with something that's fresh, & seems as vital, or more so, as when you first played together... Such is the case here with the 20-year-in-studio reunion of the JUKE RHYTHM BAND. In the mid-70's RICK VITO, JOE YUELE, DAN DURRAN & I tore-up (figuratively AND literally) the Southern California club & concert stages with the "JRB", backing up many Blues & R&B legends in the process (often-times in our "Blues Wednesday" residency at the Topanga Corral, promoted by legendary hipster TOPANGA DICK, who passed away a matter of months after contributing his voice & thoughts to a song on this album). Two of the men we backed-up regularly at the time became like 'Blues Fathers' to us: ALBERT COLLINS & GEORGE "HARMONICA" SMITH.

Each of the JRB has since gone on to great musical accomplishments, too numerous to list here, & they each jumped-big at the chance to re-group & cut some of my new tunes, which just happened to be on the funky side... It was like throwing a switch. I think we proved that now, as then, the JRB, can give up the funk with the best of 'em...

Once again, I continue to be blessed, being surrounded by musical partners (in addition to those mentioned above) who are the best-of-the-best. One could not have more effective musical 'right-hands' than BRENDA BURNS & GREGORY BOAZ. Their talent & creativity is boundless, & my music would not be what it is without them. DAVID HIDALGO & CONRAD LOZANO of Los Lobos returned along with Chill-Ace-drummer JERRY ANGEL to help me lay down a 'grinder', & 'Blues-monsters' KID RAMOS, RICHARD INNES & GARY PRIMICH fell by to do what they do best. And through it all, the unstoppable MICHAEL TEMPO provides his signature percolatin'.

In a long career full of working with hundreds & hundreds of recording engineers, I have never encountered one better than GLENN NISHIDA (who is also a fine musician). My technical 'right hand' on this album, as he was on "The Chill", he's equal parts expertise & deep soul.

Also central to this music are the RHYTHMS of the city of LOS ANGELES, my home town. Multi-textural & multi-cultural rhythms, all the time bustin' through & messin' with ya'...

Once again, it's comin' to ya' directly from my heart, soul, & experience...& once again, it sounds like it sounds & it is what it is...

EXTRA-SPECIAL THANKS TO: Stephanie Riggio (my 'miracle worker'). Brenda Burns, Gregory Boaz, Glenn Nishida, The JRB, Tempo, Saul Davis and, of course, Philippe LeBras & all the Sky Ranchers...

SPECIAL THANKS TO: All the Chill Aces, Kid Ramos, Richard Innes, Jerry Angel, David & Conrad & Los Lobos, Doug MacLeod, The Delgado Brothers, Ellen Bloom & Larry Underhill, Bruce Ayres, The Bug Music Staff, Karen Johnson & KJPR Publicity, Gary & Tina Primich, Bill Lynch, Denny Freeman, James Cruce, Tommy Kay, Mike Eldred, Jeff Turmes & Janiva Magness, John Mayall, Catfish Hodge, James Harman, Beth Oliver, Dave Alvin, The King Brothers, the KPCC staff, Sancho, Deborah Simi, Lucia D'Angelo, Amy Inouye, William Clarke (R.I.P.), Topanga Dick (R.I.P.), all my musical brothers & sisters & so so so so so many others, including all of those I thanked in the notes of my previous album, 'THE CHILL" ... (check it out, y'all).

'INSIDE-THE-JRB'-THANKS TO: Rick V. for the album title ... to Joe Y. for the harmonica box I've carried for 25 years, & to "Gentleman Dan" D. for my nickname, which he bestowed upon me way back then ... & thanks to the other JRB alumni: Robert "Fast & Funky" Stamps, Bobby "Boday" Bereman, Larry "Little Race" Council, Ernie "Mello" Corallo, "Miami" Norm Harris & honorary member Topanga Dick.

INSPIRATIONAL THANKS TO: The GOOO LORD... to the GREAT GODFATHERS & the ANGELS OF FUNK: James Brown, Albert Collins, Arlester "Dyke" Christian, Jimmy Nolen & all the JBs ... to the GREAT GODFATHERS of SOUL-JAZZ: John Coltrane, Bobby Timmons, Mose Allison, Big John Patton, Cal Tjader, Yusef Lateef, 'Professor' Art Blakey, & so many others from the Temples' of Blue Note, Impulse & Prestige... &, of course, to the GREAT GODFATHERS & GODMOTHERS OF THE BLUES... & to ALL of the players, groovers, press, radio, retailers, promoters & bookers who deal with & support music with a "JUKE RHYTHM" runnin' through it...

BEST TO YA'
JOHN "JUKE" LOGAN

THIS MUSIC IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY & INSPIRATIONAL POWER OF THE LATE, GREAT, MUSICAL & SOULFUL ELINOR "L.A. ELLIE" LOGAN. Your strong & wonderful spirit helped make my music what it is, & will remain in every note. That spirit will also remain intact within the multitudes of lives you touched. Dance on, L.A. Ellie...

Hey listen, this is a funking good record
Review written by John Fitzgerald, February 27th, 2005

This is a very good mix of R & B, blues and funk exercises which although rarely slow in tempo remains colorful throughout. The songs that Rick appears on are the most funky ones especially the irresistible rappin' of "Love me like that" (inside the CD booklet it states what is not stated on the outside packaging which is that track 14 is referred to as a "mysterioso bonus track" and is billed as "Love me like that (Primitivo mix)" which has some extra groovy rhythm guitar stand outs from Rick which are a real treat) and the
speedy epic "The real feel (JRB theme) Parts 1 & 2" (co-penned by Rick) though the piano samba styled "Dancin' on the edge of the razorblade" has some audible Vito guitar work and some interesting "jive" snippets on another Vito co-write "Da' blues hip hop" (Rick is listed as one of the "jive"ers). Although on the whole this is mostly modern sounding there are relevant splashes of purism here with some traditionally felt numbers thrown in for good measure such as the harmonica & spoons only affair "Twice pipes". Also, the packaging may not look like much outside but there's some good B & W photos of Rick inside as part of the "JRB" (Juke Rhythm Band) through the years (there's one from 1975, one from 1995, etc.) So, all in all, this is definitely one album you don't want to judge from the cover. Recommended listening.
